SoLID
Privacy policy and terms
Plain language, no tricks.
What the app collects
Nothing. SoLID runs entirely on your Mac. It has no account, no analytics, no tracking, and it never sends your lid readings, settings, or anything about your computer to us or to anyone else. Its settings page is served from your own Mac at 127.0.0.1 and cannot be reached from the network.
The one time it talks to the internet
- Installing. The installer downloads open source packages from Homebrew and the Python package index. Those services see your IP address, like any download.
- Google voice, only if you turn it on. The lines you typed for her to speak are sent to Google's text to speech service to create the audio, then saved on your Mac. If you keep the Mac voice, nothing is sent anywhere.
What this website collects
A visit counter. It stores a single total number, and sets one small cookie that lasts a day so a refresh is not counted twice. No names, no emails, no profiles. The support button takes you to PayPal, which has its own privacy policy.
What SoLID does to your Mac
- Reads the lid angle sensor. It does not write to the sensor and does not change Apple's factory calibration.
- Turns the display off and on, and puts the Mac to sleep, based on the lid angle you calibrated.
- Installs an app in Applications, a background agent that starts at login, and a folder named
solidlid in your home folder.
- Can be fully removed at any time with the uninstall line on the main page.
Terms
- SoLID is free and provided as is, with no warranty of any kind. You install and use it at your own risk.
- It is a software workaround, not a repair. A Mac whose lid sensor has not been calibrated by Apple may still behave differently from a factory Mac, for example it may need a key press to wake after a long sleep.
- Do not put a closed Mac in a bag unless you have confirmed SoLID turned the screen off. If you hear nothing and are unsure, put it to sleep from the Apple menu first.
- To the fullest extent the law allows, the authors are not liable for any damage, data loss, battery drain, or other loss arising from its use.
- SoLID is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by Apple Inc.
